Culinary Medicine Program

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) is pleased to offer this complimentary Culinary Medicine Program based on the foundational work of Michelle Hauser, MD, MS, MPA, FACP, FACLM, DipABLM, Chef. A strong foundation in culinary medicine skills — including an understanding of what constitutes a healthy diet and how to find, obtain, and prepare healthy and delicious food — is an essential part of achieving optimal health.

This resource library contains nearly fifteen hours of video content exploring fundamental kitchen knowledge, basic cooking skills, and delicious recipes, along with handouts covering topics like safe food handling,
whole grains, and mindful eating.

The program is designed to help you move toward a whole food, plant-predominant dietary pattern
and is suitable for both experienced home cooks and those new to the kitchen.

For the best user experience, we recommend using a desktop computer or laptop.

How To Use This Program

The Culinary Medicine Program is split into eight sections, each centered around a food-based theme and including information on related health topics, step-by-step walkthroughs of technical cooking skills, and recipe demonstrations.

We recommend viewing the content in order, as each session builds on the skills learned in prior sessions. However, for more advanced cooks, each video can also serve as a standalone guide to a specific recipe or technique.

Related handouts with more information are linked in each section and can also be found by clicking on the “Culinary Medicine Handout Library” section at the bottom of this page.

The resources in this library can be used as a complement to ACLM’s Culinary Medicine Curriculum or a tool to be used along with your healthcare professional. However, they are also designed to function as a standalone program for all individuals interested in learning more about culinary medicine through free, self-paced educational videos. When used independently, this program should not be construed as medical advice and is not intended to replace health recommendations from your treating clinician(s).

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) is dedicated to supporting individuals on their journey toward optimal health through a whole food, plant-predominant eating pattern. This online program and its accompanying videos are designed to help people transition to a predominantly plant-based dietary pattern, providing practical guidance, education, and inspiration along the way. While the program can be used independently for educational purposes, the most benefit will be achieved when used in partnership with your clinician.

We recognize that dietary transitions are personal and can vary greatly among individuals. While the primary focus of this program is on plant-based recipes, we understand that some people include other foods in their diets. Accordingly, this program includes recipes in some sessions that may incorporate ingredients outside of a strictly plant-based framework. These recipes are thoughtfully developed to ensure they are prepared in the healthiest way possible, and are accompanied by a variety of tools, tips, and techniques to help you successfully move along a spectrum of increasing whole, plant foods in your dietary pattern.

Our goal is to empower you with the knowledge and skills to make informed choices that align with your personal health goals, whether you’re fully plant-based or incorporating other foods into your diet. We encourage you to explore the program content, try the recipes, and take steps that best suit your lifestyle and health objectives.
